Scanly
Privacy Policy
Last updated: 3 July 2026
Short version: Scanly does not collect your personal data. Your scans, documents, and their text stay on your device, with one exception: the optional AI features (Summarize and Translate), which send the text you choose to process to an AI provider to generate a result.
Who we are
Scanly is a document scanner for iPhone. It turns paper into clean PDFs, recognizes text, and lets you compress, merge, and share documents. In this document, "we" and "the app" refer to Scanly.
Information we collect
We do not collect, store, or transmit personal information. Scanly has no accounts, no sign in, and no server that receives your files. The documents you scan and create are saved only in the app's local storage on your device.
Camera
The camera is used only to scan documents. Frames are processed on your device and are not recorded or sent anywhere beyond the pages you choose to keep. You can deny or revoke camera access at any time in the iOS Settings app.
Photos
Scanly asks for photo access so you can import an existing image as a document and save a generated PDF or image back to your library. The app only touches the specific photos you choose or save, and only after you grant permission.
Text recognition
Text recognition (OCR) runs entirely on your device using Apple's on-device frameworks. The recognized text is stored locally with the document and is not uploaded, except when you choose to use an AI feature as described below.
AI features (Summarize and Translate)
Summarize and Translate are optional. They only run when you tap them and pick a document. When you do, the recognized text of that document is sent over an encrypted connection to our processing service, which forwards it to our AI provider, OpenAI, to generate the summary or translation that is returned to you.
We do not require an account and we do not store your document text on our servers beyond what is needed to handle the request. Under OpenAI's API terms, text sent through the API is not used to train their models and is retained only for a short period for abuse monitoring. If you never use these features, no document text ever leaves your device.
Where your data lives
Everything Scanly creates is stored locally on your device. It is included in your own device and iCloud backups under your Apple account settings, which we do not control or access. Deleting the app removes its local data.
Analytics, tracking, and ads
Scanly does not use third party analytics, advertising, or tracking technologies. We do not build a profile of you, and we do not sell or share personal data, because we do not have it.
Children
Scanly is not directed to children under 13 and does not knowingly collect information from them.
Changes to this policy
If the app's data practices change, we will update this page and revise the date above. Continued use of Scanly after an update means you accept the revised policy.
